Computer Science

COMP 145 - Computing for Mathematics Educators  – Title changed to: Computing for Elementary Education. Prerequisite changed to: MATH 141 or MATH 161/161E, each of which may be taken concurrently or MATH 112. Course description changed to: In this course, future elementary educators will learn computer programming, using tools that are particularly relevant to the elementary classroom. In addition, students will use mathematical software to gain mathematical insights and solve mathematical problems, including via programming. Readings and discussion will address the ethical use of computing, as well as computing and technology in schools. Offered fall semester. Note: Students who wish to teach computer programming at the secondary level should take COMP 151 instead of, or in addition to, this course.

ELED 120 - Child Study in the Early Childhood and Elementary Education Classroom  – Course description changed to: This course is designed for students interested in the integrated knowledge of child development, classroom behaviors of children and how research findings are applied to teaching and learning environments. Content to be covered includes child development theories and research, diversity in the classroom, culturally responsive teaching and essential understandings of anti-racist teaching with a focus on development of racial identity, and the roles and responsibilities of school faculty and staff in meeting children’s developmental needs. Students will learn about the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and linguistic development and learning characteristics of children, birth through adolescence. This course requires up to 20 hours of observation in an elementary school, and the school may request a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI).

GEOG 171 - Geography of the Developing World  – Title changed to: Global Inequity. Course description changed to: Students apply geographic principles to learning about regions of the world that are often described in terms of historic disadvantages, including Latin America, Africa and parts of Asia. The world economy is shaped by colonial patterns of extraction and accumulation that continue in the modern era. In all regions of the world, however, the cultural landscape is shaped by the patterns of language, food ways and belief. These patterns result from tradition and innovation as well as trade and migration. By better understanding factors that unite as well as factors that divide, students completing this course are better prepared to advance global goals of social, economic and environmental justice.
