The Department of Theatre is committed to educating students in a significant art form. Upon completing a program in theatre, students are prepared to engage in theatre throughout their lives, to pursue advanced study in the art form or to begin a career in theatre.
The theatre arts concentration emphasizes a comprehensive theatre program within the liberal arts context. Students pursue a systematic course of study in performance, production, management, history, literature and criticism, which is enhanced by opportunities to participate in either performance or production in the department’s theatre season.
The theatre education program combines the content of the theatre program with additional learning to support Standard I requirements for licensure to teach theatre in public schools in Massachusetts.
The theatre performance concentration augments the broad based approach of the theatre arts concentration with the additional comprehensive course work in acting, voice and dance, preparing the student more thoroughly for entry-level performance occupations and graduate schools or conservatories.
Bachelor of Arts
Students majoring in this academic field may choose one of three concentrations: theatre arts, theatre education or theatre performance.
Educator Licensure
Students interested in seeking Massachusetts teacher licensure should refer to the following department links for specific teacher licensure and program requirements: Elementary and Early Childhood Education or Special Education for students double majoring in elementary education, early childhood education or special education; or Secondary Education and Professional Programs for students minoring in secondary education (high school, middle school or PreK-12 specialist).
Honors Program
The honors program in theatre arts provides highly motivated communication studies and theatre arts majors with opportunities to enhance their academic program through intensive scholarly study and research designed to be of assistance in postgraduate employment or in the pursuit of an advanced degree in theatre. Interested students should contact the Department of Theatre for further information concerning eligibility and application.
Activities and Productions
The program of theatre presents four mainstage productions annually in the 1300-seat Rondileau Campus Center auditorium. The productions usually include two plays, a musical, and an experimental work. Any interested student is invited to audition for productions.
Several student clubs are actively engaged in cocurricular activities supportive of the academic programs in the department.
The Ensemble Theatre sponsors and produces student-directed studio productions, workshops, and social and educational activities. It is open to all students interested in theatre.
Students may also receive academic credit in the department for active participation in theatre - see course descriptions for more information on the following courses:
THEA 140 - Theatre Performance Practicum
THEA 170 - Technical Theatre Practicum
THEA 172 - Theatre Costume Practicum
THEA 185 - Theatre Management Practicum
Note: A maximum of six credits in the above courses may be applied toward graduation.
