TESL 504 - Sheltered Content Instruction: Principles and Practices

(3 credits)
This course is designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to effectively organize, implement and differentiate content area instruction for English language learners (ELLs) at different levels of English proficiency. It will focus on evidenced-based practices for providing standards-based sheltered content instruction that includes teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills. Participants will learn ways to address students’ backgrounds and cultures in instruction, integrate practice in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and adapt materials for subpopulations of ELLs, such as students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE), long-term ELLs, gifted ELLs, and ELLs with exceptionalities. Course participants will discuss ways ELL teachers can collaborate with content-area teachers to engage ELLs in higher-order thinking and to provide ELLs with access to grade-level curriculum. Participants will use the current curricular and language development standards for their grade level(s) and subject area(s). Fieldwork experience may be required. Field experience may be required.
