ENGL 516 - Theories of Second Language Acquisition(3 credits) This course will introduce students to a variety of theoretical approaches in the field of second language acquisition, including Universal Grammar, Monitor Theory, Sociocultural Theory, Cognitive Theory and Critical Applied Linguistics. Special attention will be paid to the role of individual learner factors, gender, ethnicity, social class and education context in the process of second language acquisition. Students will examine both the processes and the effects of acquiring a second language in childhood and in adulthood in terms of identity construction, social justice, and individual and community linguistics rights.
