DANC 247 - Theory and Practice of Jazz Dance, Spring

(2 credits)
Prerequisite: Dance experience. Students may self-select.
This course will offer intermediate-level work in the technique and performance of jazz dance. It will also provide a historical overview of jazz dance and some of its most influential artists, so that students gain an understanding of the origins of jazz dance, its various styles and influences and how it differs from other dance forms. In addition to the art and technique of dance being practiced and performed in class, various other assignments will be required, including reading and writing assignments and critiques of video and live performances. The class is a continuation of topics addressed in DANC 237 (formerly DANP 237) but is not dependent on being taken in sequence. May be repeated once for credit. One hour of lecture and two hours of laboratory weekly. Offered spring semester. (Formerly DANP 247, PHED 247)
