PHIL 218 - Ethical Issues in Media(3 credits) Prerequisite: One 100-level course in philosophy This course will explore ethical aspects of the media and our relation to it. We are surrounded by media; from cable news and reality shows to social networks. We use it, consume it, participate in it, and are affected by it. This involvement in all realms of life brings with it ethical complexities in both private and public matters. In this course we will explore current issues in mass media using the tools of ethical reasoning. We will focus on the nature of philosophical questions as distinct from legal or sociological ones; learn to recognize ethical dilemmas, analyze them and consider their implications; and reason through and defend our positions. This will be achieved through a broad selection of topics and case studies pertaining to different aspects of contemporary mass media. Offered alternate years. (CHUM)
