Physical Education, Strength and Conditioning Concentration, MS


Department: Health and Kinesiology

This program is designed for individuals with an undergraduate major in physical education, or its equivalent, who wish to pursue new career directions related to the field in community-based organizations, such as business, industry, agencies, hospitals and educational settings or who wish to enhance their undergraduate preparation through advanced study.

Applicants who do not possess an adequate background in physical education and/or related areas will be required to make up course deficiencies. Such background course work will not be applied to the graduate program’s minimum credit requirements.

The Physical Education, Strength and Conditioning Concentration MS program offers an accelerated pathway to allow students to complete both their Bachelors and Masters degree in as little as five years. In this accelerated pathway, students will complete their Bachelor of Science in Physical Education while having the opportunity to begin graduate level course work as early as their third year. These graduate courses will satisfy degree requirements at both the Undergraduate and Graduate level ensuring a true accelerated academic experience.

Admission Requirements


  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 based upon four years of work or a 3.0 undergraduate GPA based upon work completed during the junior and senior year
  • Three appropriate letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work

Program of Study


Exit requirement: Culminating Experience


All candidates will be required to show evidence of a culminating experience by successfully completing one of the following:

​A. PHED 501 - Physical Education Project  (3 credits) with an oral defense, under the guidance of an advisor

B. PHED 502 - Thesis  (6 credits) with an oral defense. Original research is undertaken by the graduate student in their field. For further information, please see the Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures  ”Thesis”  section of the catalog.

C. PHED 565 - Collaborative Research in Physical Education  (3 credits) with public presentation

D. Departmental comprehensive examination. For further information, please see the Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures  ”Comprehensive Examination” section of the catalog. (3 credit elective required)

E. Nationally accredited Strength and Conditioning Certification: CSCS, CSCCa or SCCC (additional fee) (3 credit elective required)
