The Literature concentration in English introduces students to the critical reading, writing and thinking tools central to the discipline of literary studies. This concentration exposes students to a rich variety of literatures in English from different historical periods, nations, genres and traditions, exploring how literature both influences and is influenced by the world around it. Students will have multiple opportunities to learn how to enter the scholarly conversations at the heart of literary studies and will be well prepared to bring a variety of skills to the workplace or to enter graduate programs in literature, law or public service.

Foundations in Literary Studies (6 credits)
200-Level Electives (6 credits)
Complete two courses, selected from the following, only one course may be ENGL 227 , ENGL 228 or ENGL 229 Literature Before 1900 (6 credits)
Complete 2 courses, selected from the following ENGL 327 and ENGL 399 are allowed, with pre-1900 focus and department approval via the “Substitute or Waive a Course in my Major” form. 300-400 Level Electives (12 credits)
Only 3 credits/1 course may be ENGL 371 or ENGL 372 . Students may also choose additional pre-1900 courses listed in “Literature before 1900” above. Elementary or Early Childhood Education double majors may count ELED 314 - Literacy and Language for Emergent Readers and Writers toward the 300-level elective requirement with approval via the “Substitute or Waive a Requirement in my Major” form Research Methods in Literature (3 credits)
Complete one course, selected from below. Additional Research Methods courses may be taken for elective credit after requirement has been satisfied with department approval via the “Substitute or Waive a Requirement in my Major” form. Capstone: Senior seminar (3 credits)
Complete one course, selected from the following. Additional Seminars may also be taken for elective credit, after requirement has been satisfied with department approval via the “Substitute or Waive a Requirement in my Major” form. Culturally Diverse Literature
Satisfy the Culturally Diverse Literature requirement by completing at least one approved culturally diverse course at the 200, 300 or 400 level. This requirement may be met by selecting a course from the list below that also fulfills another program requirement. Total minimum credits: 36
