The graduate reading program with a concentration in Special Education, Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8 or 5-12) offers the degree of Master of Education with a specialty in reading and a concentration in theory, practices and strategies for preparing reading specialists to work with students with disabilities. This program leads to institutional endorsement for Massachusetts licensure as a Reading Specialist (all levels). Program learning experiences and outcomes are designed to meet the International Literacy Association’s Standards for the Preparation of Reading Professionals. Candidates in this concentration may be able to add the new teaching field (Moderate Disabilities) to their existing license after fulfilling requirements set forth in the “Additional Licenses” section of the MA Educator Licensure regulations (603CMR 7.15 (2) (a)). Candidates must complete all of the following course and program requirements.

Admission Requirements
- A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 unless the candidate holds a Master’s degree
- Three letters of recommendation
- Possession of a Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education active teacher licensure (Initial or Professional)
- Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work*
- Personal statement
*Applicants applying for this concentration should have taken an introduction to special education course prior to beginning this program, or they can add the introductory course to their program requirements below, making the total credits 39.

In addition to the course requirements above, candidates must demonstrate the following competencies:
*For students in the early admissions program at BSU, one graduate course (3 credits) in Reading taken as an undergraduate and completed with a minimum grade of “B” may be applied to fulfill MEd program requirements.
