Department: Global Languages and Literatures
The Japanese Studies minor offers an immersive and comprehensive exploration of Japanese language, culture and society. This minor requires students to complete a total of four language courses, advancing up to the intermediate level in Japanese proficiency, to ensure a strong foundation in communication. These language courses equip students with the necessary linguistic skills to engage effectively with Japanese-speaking communities. Additionally, students choose two electives that cater to diverse academic interests and professional development. Electives include opportunities to further develop their proficiency in Japanese language and culture, and include an internship, providing students with practical experience and exposure to the real-world application of Japanese language and culture; a study and application of the contemplative arts; and a virtual study abroad experience, offering an innovative and immersive way to learn about Japan’s culture, history and contemporary issues without leaving their home country. Through this minor, students gain a multifaceted understanding of Japan, preparing them for a wide range of future opportunities in various fields while fostering intercultural competence and linguistic proficiency.
