Department: Special Education

The Graduate Bilingual Education Certificate Program prepares teachers to teach in bilingual programs (Two-Way Immersion and Transitional Bilingual Education). This program is ideal for teachers who wish to get their bilingual endorsement to teach in bilingual programs, in P-12 and beyond. All language backgrounds are welcome in this program as long as students have met the minimum language requirements LASP 281 (Spanish Conversation) and LASP 300 (Spanish Composition) or equivalent courses in another non-English partner language (or consent of program chairperson). The certificate program provides teachers with an introduction to the principles and practices of bilingual education, an overview of multilingual language acquisition and strategies for effectively instructing and assessing multilingual learners in bilingual programs. Culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy and current practices and issues in bilingual education will be integrated across courses. Field experiences observing and teaching in bilingual settings will be integrated into program curricula.

Admission Requirements

All applicants to graduate certificate programs will complete the standard graduate school application forms which are common to all certificate programs. A bachelor’s degree is required for admission to all graduate certificate programs. Admission is rolling for fall, spring and summer enrollment. Applications should be complete to allow adequate time for processing before the start of the semester (usually six weeks prior to the beginning of classes).

In addition to a completed application, every applicant should submit the following:

  • an official college transcript of the completed baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.8
  • initial teaching license
  • an official college transcript of graduate course work (if applicable)
  • a short essay on the value of the graduate certificate program for the applicant
  • one appropriate letter of recommendation from an academic or professional
  • students must demonstrate advanced language skills (composition and conversation) in the non-English partner language (example: LASP 281 Spanish Conversation & LASP 300 Spanish Composition); or equivalent courses in another language; or consent of the DGCE chairperson or LANG department chairperson
