This program is a degree program for partial fulfillment of Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education professional licensure requirements.

Admission Requirements


Candidates must:

  • meet all College of Graduate Studies admission requirements
  • have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8
  • submit evidence of Massachusetts Special Education Initial Teacher Licensure in Severe (all levels)
  • submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work

Program of Study


In consultation with an advisor, students undertake appropriate course work and activities.

Candidates who have enrolled in appropriate course work prior to admission are limited in the number of credits (six) that can be applied to their degree. Therefore, candidates are urged to complete the application for graduate admission as soon as possible. For details regarding transfer credit, consult the Admission – Graduate  section of this catalog.

Required course (1 credit)


Professional content electives (18 credits)


Appropriate content-based course work will be determined with an advisor and will include any 500-level course in special education (SPED), except SPED 501, SPED 504, SPED 505, SPED 508, SPED 510, SPED 529, SPED 530, SPED 575 and SPED 576. Courses in other content areas (e.g., reading, arts and sciences, counseling, etc.) may be approved on a case-by-case basis.
