DepartmentElementary and Early Childhood Education 

The graduate reading program offers the degree of Master of Education in reading with a concentration in Language, Literacy and Culture. This Master of Education program provides experienced educators who already hold an initial license with an opportunity to enhance and expand their knowledge and skills in the area of language, literacy and culture. This program provides educators with a foundation in literacy learning across diverse populations and content areas, the use of assessment to inform instruction, the integration of the language arts, the integration of technology, and the knowledge of how to select and use a variety of genres of children’s books in the K-6 classroom. This Master of Education in reading concentration does not provide a Reading Specialist license.

Admission Requirements


  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 based on four years of work or a 3.0 undergraduate GPA based on work completed in the junior and senior years
  • A rating of highly recommended on one of three letters of recommendation (at least one from someone who has knowledge of applicant’s aptitude for advanced scholarship)
  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work
  • Personal statement

In addition to the course requirements above, candidates must demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Successful completion of the Literacy Professional’s Library
  • An oral presentation or exhibit pertaining to a topic in literacy
  • A passing score on the written comprehensive examination (Please see Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures  for additional information.)
  • Support for the work of professional literacy organizations

Total minimum credits: 30
