CYGR 504 - Basics of Networking for Cybersecurity

(3 credits)
This course provides a foundational understanding of computer networking, emphasizing its critical role in cybersecurity. It is designed for graduate students both with and without prior networking experience. The course covers how computers communicate, essential networking devices, internet infrastructure and core security principles. Students learn to identify network components, key protocols and security vulnerabilities. Through hands-on activities, students apply their knowledge by troubleshooting and implementing security best practices. Additionally, students analyze network structure and security risks, evaluate potential threats and create informed strategies for network defense. This course helps students be equipped with the necessary expertise to engage effectively in cybersecurity discussions and decision-making. Offered annually.
