ANTH 226 - African Ethnomedicine

This course examines the diverse medical systems existing on the African continent and their crucial roles in alleviating suffering in the era of globalization. Topics to be addressed include African medical practices, indigenous knowledge and beliefs, and the rich pharmacopeia that people rely on to prevent and treat ill health. Students will also be introduced to other great medical traditions, such as Chinese, Indian, Islamic, Christian and Roman medicine and biomedicine including complementary and alternative medicines. Students will critically analyze the intersections of medical traditions, differential access to health care, and the effects of wealth and poverty on human well-being. Offered annually.
