PHIL 403 - Ethics and Action(3 credits) Prerequisite: Two courses in philosophy at or above the 200 level; or consent of instructor This course examines both historical and recent discussions of problems and arguments concerning moral reasons, knowledge, character, motivation, justification, judgements, and action. Questions include: Can we have moral knowledge? If so, in what does it consist? Are moral disagreements capable of rational resolution? What does it mean to be moral? Are there morally preferable ideals, qualities of character, and ways of life? Are there moral facts or truths independent of human desires, preferences, and agreements? Offered alternate years. May be taken for graduate-level credit with consent of department chairperson. (CHUM; CWRT)
