This course is a survey of Ireland’s literary past dating from the 1800 Act of Union with Great Britain to the 1922 formation of the Irish Free State. While early Irish literature translated from Gaelic may be part of the course content, the course will focus on the pioneering fiction of writers like Maria Edgeworth, William Carleton, Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker; and the poetry of the 19th century balladeers, Thomas Moore, Thomas Davis, James Clarence Managan and Sir Samuel Ferguson; the accomplishments of the Irish literary revival of 1890-1920; fiction by James Joyce; poetry and plays by Lady Gregory and William Butler Yeats; and plays by John M Synge and Sean O’Casey.
