READ 538 - Diverse Literacy Learners and Intervention

(3 credits)
This course will provide an overview of learners with different characteristics, including academic ability, language, culture, socioeconomic factors and background experiences. Through discussions and readings, candidates will explore the role of culture and language in learning and the richness that culturally and linguistically diverse learners bring to classrooms, as well as the challenges they may face. The course also explores notions of equity that will provide candidates with the information they need to create learning environments that are free of bias and provide a differentiated approach to education for all students. In addition, there will be an emphasis on the integration of research, theory and practice that invites participants to take a hands-on approach to understanding the current literature on “striving” readers and its applications to their own real-world classroom contexts.  Offered fall and spring semesters.
