PHIL 238 - Star Wars and Philosophy

(3 credits)
Throughout human history, philosophical works take many forms, including dialogues, treatises, poetry, epigrams and narrative. In many cultures, mythology about heroes, gods and supernatural dangers express the philosophical concerns, values and aspirations of its society. This course will examine philosophical themes in what may be the most recent work to achieve the status of genuine myth, the Star Wars space opera, centered on the six films written and/or directed by George Lucas, along with contributions by secondary creatives in his universe. As we do so, we will uncover and reflect on the global mythologies, cultures and philosophies that informed and resonate with the Star Wars saga. Offered alternate years. (CGCL; CHUM)
