HIST 401 - Gender in African History(3 credits) Prerequiste: Any two of the following: HIST 111, HIST 112, HIST 131, HIST 132, HIST 221, HIST 222; or consent of instructor This course explores what gender has meant across African History, and how changing ideas about gender and power shed light on broader changes in African societies. We investigate four questions: How can we understand gender in Africa before European colonialism? What role did gender play in the rise and fall of colonialism? How have gendered relationships changed in postcolonial Africa? Unltimately, how do African histories of gender change our broader understanding of the role of gender in global history? We answer these questions through case studies from around the continent, focusing on the medieval period through the recent past. Offered alternate years. May be taken for graduate-level credit.
