DANC 225 - Theory and Practice of African Diaspora Dance(2 credits) Prerequisite: Dance experience. Students may self-select. This course is an introduction to the foundation, aesthetics, history and practice of African Diaspora dance, which is dance that exists outside of Africa and has strong cultural connections, lineages and foundations in the continent. The course focuses on movement vocabulary that is rooted in Africa. It also emphasizes the broader concepts of cultural knowledge, dance terminology, muscle memory, musicality, binary awareness, creativity, dynamic nuances and dance performance skills. Knowledge of this content will provide students with a foundation in African dance vocabulary, African Diaspora dance and dance critical analysis in diverse cultural settings. Repeatable: may earn a maximum of four credits. Offered annually.
