MATH 611 - Algebra I(3 credits) Prerequisite: Admission to the MS program in Mathematics or consent of instructor This is the first course in graduate-level Abstract Algebra, providing a rigorous discussion of group theory and a brief introduction to ring theory. The course will cover important definitions, examples and results of group theory, including subgroups, cyclic groups, quotient groups, Lagrange’s Theorem, Cayley’s Theorem, Sylow’s Theorems, and direct and semidirect products. Introductory definitions and classic examples of ring theory will be covered in the latter part of the semester. Offered annually.
