ENGL 319 - Contemporary Native American Literature

Prerequisite: ENGL 203 and ENGL 234
Recent decades have witnessed a remarkable revival of Native American culture. This course explores some of the literature at the heart of indigenous people’s efforts to counter the effects of colonization, to recover deeply-rooted traditions, and to reimagine what it means to be Native in contemporary America. Students will explore a range of literature from the Native American Renaissance in the late 1960s to the present. Authors may include N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Marmon Silko, James Welch, Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Linda Hogan, Sherman Alexie and Tommy Orange. Offered annually.
