EDLE 506 - Community College and Global Post-Secondary Education(3 credits) Prerequisite: EDLE 504 This course will focus on the history, mission, role and issues of the American community college and other global post-secondary educational institutions. There will be an examination of issues related to access, persistence and institutional culture as well as the needs and composition of a diverse student body in the community college. A detailed review of the various aspects of the community college culture including but not limited to administration, faculty and governance of the community college is conducted. The successful student in this course will be able to identify and pose an approach to the challenges of the administrative structure of the American community college.
The course design creates thought provoking discussions that provide students a better understanding of the development and organization of the community college as an educational institution, its accomplishments and challenges to future access for adult learners who prefer this learning environment. This course will also provide a detailed description of the characteristics of the community colleges as institutions of higher education, its historical origins and its contemporary role in American and global societies as well as providing students the opportunity to describe and make judgments about the students, faculty, staff and administration of this alternative/gateway to 4-year colleges/universities and careers.
