CHST 398 - Service Learning in Childhood Studies

(3 credits)
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor
This course explores a childhood studies topic such as children’s voices, delinquency, health, needs and neglect, parenting, play, poverty, representation, schooling and schools, and spaces for children and children’s places and applies those concepts in service learning work with a community partner. Topics and partnerships with community agencies may vary from semester to semester. Students will engage in community service off campus using what they have learned in class to complete the 10 hours of service work. Students will be active learners, and they will be encouraged to reflect on and evaluate the service work that they and their community partners do. Repeatable: may earn a maximum of six credits; only the first three will count toward the Childhood Studies major. Ten hours of service work required. Offered fall and spring semesters.
