ARTS 217 - Photography I: Digital Photography

(3 credits)
Prerequisite: ARTS 104 or consent of instructor
This course explores the possibilities of digital photography as an expressive medium. Students learn to use professional cameras and to manipulate their images with digital software. Through projects that emphasize conceptual development, visual aesthetics and technical skills, students learn to create and evaluate their photographs. Assigned reading and class discussion will address contemporary issues in art and photography, emphasizing the complex and shifting nature of photography and its diverse cultural applications. Students will be exposed to the works of both contemporary and historical photographers to understand their work in context. Additional technical instruction includes lighting, color managed digital workflow and output for archival printing. Cameras are available to checkout for this course. Meets six hours weekly. Offered fall and spring semesters. Additional fee required.
