ENGL 277 - Topics in Latin American and Caribbean Literary Studies(3 credits) Prerequisite: ENGL 102 In this course, students will study the diverse literatures of Latin America and the Caribbean, reading beyond Western distinctions of language and imperial possession. Students will learn how the region’s people have crafted a rich literary tradition that resists a long history of colonialism. Topics will vary but may include specific historical periods, literary genres such as poetry and the Marvelous Real, LGBTQ identities or political movements like Négritude. Students can expect to read authors such as Jamaica Kincaid, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Astrid Roemer and Edwidge Danticat. Repeatable for different topics: may earn a maximum of six credits.
