ELED 492 - Supervised Teaching in Public Schools: Elementary

(6 or 9 or 12 credits)
Prerequisite: ELED 414 and ELED 421 and ELED 430 and ELED 450; Students must be admitted to student teaching, which requires a formal application to the College of Education and Health Sciences, have a minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA, have completed all prerequisite course work, and have successfully passed all required Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL®). Students should be finished with all other undergraduate course work to proceed into student teaching (consideration for an exception to this should be sent to the Elementary and Early Childhood Education Department practicum coordinator).
This student-teaching practicum is a supervised experience for one semester. Candidates are assigned by the College of Education and Health Sciences to an appropriate elementary-school classroom (grades 1-6) where they will work to develop and refine their teaching skills. Candidates will have the opportunities to observe students and classrooms, design curriculum, practice effective classroom-management techniques, utilize contemporary teaching strategies and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Candidates will be coached and supervised by a qualified, on-site cooperating practitioner and a faculty member of the elementary and early childhood department. Candidates are required to attend periodic seminars on educational topics relevant to the student teaching experience. A candidate must demonstrate their competencies for initial teaching licensure and complete all departmental requirements. May be taken for six or nine or 12 credits. Offered fall and spring semesters. May be taken for graduate-level credit.
