LASP 165 - Spanish for Healthcare Professions(3 credits) Prerequisite: LASP 102 or consent of instructor This course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge and language skills of health care related vocabulary, documents, concepts, and cultural practices in the medical professions. (Such professions include, but are not limited to pre-medicine/medicine, nursing, social work, emergency medical technicians, physical and respiratory therapists, pre-dental medicine/dentists, nutritionists, hospital administrators, and others) This course uses a multi-faceted approach that focuses on the building of the different abilities needed (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and interacting) while working in any aspect of the medical fields with Spanish-speaking patients, co-workers, and staff. To achieve these goals, students will make use of a variety of sources that will include, but are not limited to the textbook, workbook, videos, on-line newspapers, case studies, Internet, and discussion boards; will produce documents and summaries, and will practice with role-play situations typical of various healthcare environments. This course places particular emphasis on the linguistic and cultural registers of the Spanish language as well as on the specialized vocabulary pertinent to the medical fields. Offered annually.
