ENGL 347 - Queer Rhetorics

(3 credits)
Prerequisite: ENGL 226
This course looks at the rhetorical structures that queer communicators engage in and respond to as they seek to advocate for themselves and their communities. Areas of inquiry will include (but are not limited to): queer artistic expressions; intersectional queer rhetorical practices; legal advocacy; social activism (including AIDS activism); and inter-community rhetorical practices. Throughout the semester, students will examine the rhetorical strategies of queer rhetors, apply queer rhetorical analysis to queer and “non- queer” texts alike, engage in queer rhetorical practices, and learn how to speak confidently about the overlaps of rhetoric, sexuality, gender, power and identity. Offered alternate years.
