LASP 171 - Intermediate Spanish for Elementary Education(3 credits) Prerequisite: LASP 102 or consent of instructor In this course, students will advance their skills in Spanish listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture through engagement with authentic Spanish-language texts for and about children. Materials may include traditional rhymes, songs and folk stories, as well as literary texts by renowned Hispanic writers. While this course includes explicit instruction in vocabulary and grammar, it is primarily content-based and communicative, meaning that students will advance their Spanish language skills largely by reading closely, discussing and engaging creatively with texts in Spanish. At the same time, students will learn about cultural attitudes towards children in the Spanish-speaking world, become acquainted with authentic Spanish-language materials relevant to elementary education settings, and gain familiarity with important literary writers studied in the Spanish major. This course is conducted in Spanish and designed to fulfill the speaking-intensive Core Curriculum requirement. Offered annually. (CGCL; CHUM; CMCL; CSPI)
