(4 credits)
Prerequisite: BIOL 321 with a minimum grade of “C-” or equivalent; or consent of instructor
Corequisite: BIOL 465L

This course will study the sequence and analysis of DNA within select organisms and its arrangement into both coding and noncoding elements. Lecture will include topics such as DNA ancestry testing and genetic association studies of diseases in humans. Laboratory techniques in molecular biology will provide practical experiences in genomics through analysis of both human DNA and that of select organisms. Computer coding and various bioinformatics tools used to analyze genomes will be introduced and applied to practical problems in genomics from publicly available data and our own laboratory results. Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory weekly. Offered alternate spring semesters.
