PHIL 252 - Philosophy of Money

(3 credits)
Prerequisite: One 100-level, three credit course in philosophy; or consent of instructor
This course explores questions of social philosophy pertaining to money. Central questions include: What is money? Where does it come from? What is its function? How should we understand its value in relation to other values? Does money stifle individuality and promote alienation, or does it foster individuality and promote equality? How are capitalist and socialist conceptions of money different? Questions such as these are taken up in the context of a variety of primary-source readings. Offered alternate years. (CHUM)
