CHEM 466 - Advanced Biochemistry Laboratory

(2 credits)
Prerequisite: CHEM 452 with a minimum grade of “C-” and CHEM 456 with a minimum grade of “C-“
CHEM 466 is designed as an advanced course in biochemical techniques that builds upon the foundations covered in the first biochemistry experience, CHEM 456. This course is a Course-Based Research Experience (CURE) where students develop independent hypothesis driven research by examining structure-activity relationships of proteins. The semester long research questions are answered by using bioinformatics, computer modeling of protein structure, site-directed mutagenesis, protein purification and enzyme activity assays. The topic of research is based on the faculty member’s research expertise. The aim of the course is to introduce students to research to prepare them for graduate school and/or employment in the chemical or biotechnology industries. Repeatable for different topics: may earn a maximum of four credits. Offered fall and spring semesters. May be taken for graduate-level credit.
