(3 credits) Prerequisite: SOCI 102 or consent of instructor This course examines the cultural and social structure of traditional and modern China and Japan. The course will focus on topics such as work and economy, rural-urban contrasts, family and kinship, the position of women and the relationships between state and society. The course will conclude with an assessment of the positions of these two societies in the contemporary world. Offered fall semester. (CGCL; CMCL; CSOC)
