SOCI 353 - Experiencing World Cities(3 credits) Prerequisite: SOCI 300 or consent of instructor The world is now urban. From global cities such as New York, Tokyo and London, to large but much poorer cities such as Sao Paolo, Mexico City and Cairo, over half of the world’s population lives in cities. In order to understand cities in a global context, the course covers the processes of globalization especially as they have an impact on cities around the world. Topics covered include the global cities hypothesis, the new inequalities among and within cities, case studies of cities in the new urban global economy, global urban networks and the nature of urban life in rich and poor cities.
