HIST 419 - The Medieval Church

Prerequisite: Any two of the following: HIST 111, HIST 112, HIST 131, HIST 132, HIST 221, HIST 222; or consent of instructor
It is difficult to imagine an institution more powerful and influential than the Christian church during the Middle Ages. This course explores a wide range of issues in medieval history from the vantage point of religion and the church. Themes include conversion, monasticism, sacred and secular power, intellectual life, belief and heresy, and relations between Christians and non-Christians. Offered alternate years. May be taken for graduate-level credit.
