GEOL 450 - Geochemistry

(4 credits)
Prerequisite: GEOL 225 or CHEM 142
Corequisite: GEOL 450L

This course explores the application of thermodynamic principles to solve geologic problems. The chemical interaction of rock and water will be emphasized, as it relates to the chemistry of natural waters on and near the surface of the earth, rock weathering and global geochemical cycles. Laboratory work will include the analytical techniques used to measure water chemistry and computer modeling of natural geochemical systems. Two hours of lecture and four hours of laboratory weekly. Offered alternate fall semesters. (Formerly EASC 450)
