ANTH 527 - New England Ethnic and Regional Communities(3 credits) Prerequisite: ANTH 508 This seminar introduces graduate students to the rich and diverse ethnic history and contemporary communities of New England. We explore how we define “ethnicity” and “regionalism” in the context of New England, and examine both ethnic groups and New England regions, such as Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Cape Cod, and Boston’s North End and South Boston. Ethnic groups we will investigate include Irish, Italians, Cape Verdeans, Asians, Caribbean people, Armenians, Native American, and many others, both large and small. Offered alternate years.
