Fall 2020 Pass No Pass Policy

Policy Statement:

For the Fall 2020 semester only, undergraduate students will have the option of requesting Pass/No Pass (P/N) grades rather than traditional letter grades in up to 9 credits. All courses offered in the Fall 2020 semester will be eligible for P/N grading unless a department has submitted a request by December 9, 2020 which has been approved by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs to opt-out of Pass/No Pass Grading for the Fall 2020 semester. A list of departments who have opted-out of Pass/No Pass grading may be found on the Registrar’s Office page.

On December 23, a form will be available to students on the Registrar’s webpage which will enable them to opt-in for P/N grading after letter grades have been submitted by faculty on December 22, 2020. Students may opt-in for P/N grades for up to 9 credits in the Fall 2020 semester until December 30, 2020.

The Registrar’s Office will change any letter grade(s) (A through D-) to a Pass (P) and any Failing grade(s) to a No Pass (N), if a student has opted-in to P/N grading. Late requests after December 30, 2020 will be considered upon appeal to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies or designee until May 1, 2021.

Prerequisites for future courses will be assessed based on the original letter grade earned.

Students may opt into a maximum of 9 credits for a grade of pass in the Fall 2020 semester. A Pass grade will be considered equivalent to a D- for Fall 2020 only, after which the standard for a Pass grade will revert back to the previous definition of a C. A P grade will earn credit toward graduation but will not be used to calculate the GPA, either overall or in a major. A No Pass grade will not earn credit toward graduation and will not be used in calculating the GPA, either overall or in a program.

Students are strongly encouraged to consult their academic advisor prior to making a decision to ensure they understand the full impact of requesting P grades in place of earned letter grades for the Fall 2020 semester.

Clarification of the Policy

•Students may opt-in to P/N grades for individual courses for the Fall 2020 semester up to 9 credits by completing a Pass/No Pass Opt-In form available on the Registrar’s webpage.

•Students may opt-in to Pass/No Pass grades beginning December 23 and continuing until December 30, 2020.

•Students may appeal for consideration to opt-in to P/N grading after December 30 through the Dean of Undergraduate Studies or designee.

•End of term processing, including calculation of grade point averages, academic standing and satisfactory academic progress for financial aid, will occur after all Pass/No Pass requests have been received/processed.

•An FAQ will be developed to ensure students understand all areas to consider before deciding to request P/N grades. Students will be cautioned to talk with an advisor prior to making a final decision.

•Students are still eligible for Latin honors and honors designations regardless of whether they opt in for Pass/No Pass grading in the Fall 2020 semester.

•Prerequisites shall be assessed based on the original letter grade.

•However, included in the FAQ will be advice for students to use the Repeat Course policy for any course that does not meet the minimum grade requirement for forward placement. Students will need to use a Repeat Course form to repeat any course with a grade of Pass.

•The opt-in P/N grades only applies to undergraduate courses and is approved as an option for the Fall 2020 semester.

•The Dean’s List policy will not change.
