Sociology Major Learning Outcomes


Goal 1: Sociological Imagination

Outcome: Describe the discipline of Sociology and apply the Sociological Imagination to an understanding of the social world.

Goal 2: Social Theory

Outcome: Define the role of Social Theory in sociological research and the development of knowledge.

Goal 3: Research Methods and Data Analysis

Outcome: Identify the basic methodological approaches, recognize critical ethical issues, and assess the evidence used in sociological research and policy.

Goal 4: Individuals and Institutions

Outcome: Explain the relationship between individuals and social institutions and contrast their differences across time and social context.

Goal 5: Inequality in Society

Outcome: Make appropriate generalizations by social group and explain variation using sociological theory, research, and empirical evidence.

Goal 6: Global Cultures

Outcome: Articulate the ways that large global systems affect local and national contexts and further demonstrate how globalization has caused (or is causing, to keep in active voice) global divisions between societies, as well as mounting inequalities within societies.

Goal 7: Information Literacy and Critical Thinking

Outcome: Identify and retrieve appropriate information from the internet and critically analyze, apply, synthesize, evaluate and adapt it to our sociological knowledge.
