Music Major Learning Outcomes


The individual completing our BA in Music will be able to:

Outcome:  Performance

Demonstrate performance skills necessary for artistic self-expression in one major performance area as well as keyboard proficiency.

  1. Demonstrate skills (e.g. in rhythm, tone quality, pitch/intonation, and articulation/diction) necessary for artistic self-expression in at least one major performance area.
  2. Effectively perform a varied repertoire in the major performance area.
  3. Demonstrate keyboard proficiency.

Outcome:  Theory

Understand the common elements and organizational patterns of music.

  1. Identify the common elements and organizational patterns of music through aural recognition.
  2. Identify the common elements and organizational patterns of music through visual analysis.
  3. Analyze a musical score using appropriate analytical methods.

Outcome:  History

Distinguish the major eras, composers, and genres of music history and literature within broad historical, cultural, and stylistic contexts.

  1. Recognize by ear the musical styles associated with the major eras of music history.
  2. Describe in writing the musical styles associated with the major eras of music history.
  3. Distinguish in writing among the musical styles associated with the major eras of music history.
  4. Articulate critical assessments of music.
