ANTH 420 - Visual Anthropology

(3 credits)
Prerequisite: ANTH 100 or consent of instructor
This course is grounded in interpretive and semiotic theories and examines the uses of images for cultural documentation, interpretation and analysis. Students will examine the roles of objectivity, ideology and perspective in the production and interpretation of visual images in motion and still photography. Emphasis will be on how visual images represent the cultural, vis-à-vis gender, social class, ethnicity and socio-cultural context. Offered alternate years. May be taken for graduate-level credit.
